Wellness in Mexico-My Experience at Palmaia, the House of Aia

|

Are you searching for a unique opportunity to disconnect from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with yourself in a serene and peaceful environment? Does waking up to the sound of ocean waves, surrounded by the vibrant beauty of nature, with daily yoga sessions on the beach sound blissful? Look no further than the tranquil escape designed to rejuvenate both mind and body at Palmaia, the house of Aia, an all-inclusive wellness resort in Mexico.

When I first learned about Palmaia, the House of Aia I was intrigued with the vibe. I enjoy eating well, have a deep love for nature, and have recently grown more curious about the benefits of meditation and daily gratitude rituals. The photos were stunning and the promise of a transformative wellness experience led me to booking a stay. Also appealing was their recent Michelin Two Key award (a hotel recognized for offering an exceptional stay with a distinct personality and charm, notable design and a strong sense of place).

If you’re not into practicing yoga or meditation consistently, don’t be intimidated as they offer something for any level. Your journey at Palmaia is designed to be a safe and welcoming space, encouraging self-reflection. Before diving into the foundations of the experience, here’s an overview of the place.

Palmaia, the House of Aia’s Setting

Nestled in the heart of Playa del Carmen’s stunning landscape, the resort rests on a beautiful stretch of beach with that sought after turquoise water and plenty of distance for beach walks. Surrounded by 400 acres of Mayan jungle and mangrove forest, the buildings are thoughtfully designed using natural materials like wood and stone, blending into the landscape and the entire aesthetic is framed by the rhythm of the waves and bird song. Winding paths lead you throughout the property and include tranquil beachfront and jungle pavilions where the daily yoga, meditation and breathwork classes are held. There are so many unique and serene places to explore here (and you can do so via their complimentary bikes) including a bonsai house, plunge pools, unlimited Bali beds, cenotes, and their jungle spa which was voted top three in the world.

Cenotes

Scattered throughout Palmaia, the House of Aia are several cenotes, many of which you can swim in or just admire the colorful fish and turtle residents. Cenotes are natural sinkholes that form when limestone bedrock collapses exposing groundwater. Throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, there are over 10,000 cenotes that are all connected, forming the largest underground river system. Considered sacred places for the Mayans with healing properties, the fact that several cenotes are located on Palmaia property is very appropriate.

Room Amenities

Beyond the private terrace and organic bed linens, unique room amenities include calming teas and nutrient rich snacks like papaya and almonds, along with a mini-fridge stocked with coconut water, infused water and kombucha. Plush robes, slippers and organic bath products are also available to amplify your comfort. Your room key is a wooden bracelet that you wear during your stay and saved me lots of time digging through my beach bag in search of a traditional key card.

Nomadic Guide

When you arrive, you’ll be introduced to your Nomadic Guide who will provide you with a room tour, overview of the daily activities and assistance with dining reservations throughout your stay. Communication was very easy via WhatsApp and each evening, she would send the following day’s “Architects of Life” activities with personalized recommendations. If I ever had questions or needed something, I could easily send a message and receive a helpful reply.

Dining & Mixology at Palmaia

There are six dining experiences to enjoy and the food here is one of the main pillars of the entire experience (more on that later). Although the resort is known for its “clean” ingredients and impressive plant based menu, if you are non-vegan like myself, you will find plenty of fresh caught fish and high quality meat cuts to enjoy. With options ranging from Mediterranean, Italian, Mexican and Asian, and even a beach front taco truck, the menus were some of the most unique I have ever had the pleasure to order from. Everything was so fresh and colorful and the presentation was a work of art. From dishes featuring squash blossoms, mushrooms, pacific prawns, wood fired sourdough pizza with cashew cheese, poke or quinoa bowls, tacos, breakfast burritos and enchiladas, the food was fantastic.

My favorite way to start my morning was either a visit to Plantissa (the most inviting coffee house I’ve ever seen) or room service on my balcony. At Plantissa, I enjoyed the variety of power shots, fresh smoothies and custom yogurt/acai bowls. Room service is available 24-7 and I savored breakfast on my balcony after a morning beach walk and yoga session.

Check out this avocado toast on sourdough with the most delightful fruit bowl.

Palmaia’s mixology menu is also impressive with one of a kind cocktail and mocktail options. During dinner, my drinks were inspired by a solar eclipse and the moon! Check out this ingredient list: cold pressed pineapple, blue spirulina, lime, ginger, nixtamal syrup and cardamom ash, with rum if you wished. Pool and beachside service is also available and the ingredients ranged from fresh basil, lime juice, cucumber, raspberry, coconut and hibiscus (to name a few).

The Four Aia Pillars

During my visit to the spa, I was visiting with my masseuse about the meaning behind the House of Aia. The foundation of the experience presented at Palmaia centers around the concept of becoming the master of your health (mind, body, spirit) by working inward and returning to your divine energy imprint. Some might call it a journey of self-discovery. Rooted in natural connection, the houses of Aia are based on the sacred teaching of the Mayans where brothers traveled through four different houses on their journey of spiritual growth. The four houses include:

Nourishing biome: What we consume is directly correlated to how we feel and all of the food choices are tailored for maximal vitality. Palmaia’s promise of clean eating includes: minimizing the amounts of processed food, no refined sugars, no refined seed oils, including homemade fermented foods, incorporating vegetables from organic, regenerative farms in Mexico, prioritizing seasonal fruit and offering breads made from sourdough or natural, unbleached flours.

Rituals of Sound: Throughout your stay at Palmaia, you’ll be immersed in different sounds designed to share and release energy. Whether it be the hum of the jungle, the rhythm of the ocean, bird song, or the unique sounds used during spa treatments to clear the energy, Palmaia is a whole sensory vibe. They also offer gong baths and music sessions at their Eolo Beach Club. You can even check out their playlist on Spotify.

Architects of Life: With over 30 different health activities offered every week, I looked forward to previewing the daily offerings each evening before bed. From meditations, to watercolor, breathwork to constellations, gratitude rituals, forgiveness ceremonies, full body movement, yoga and even fragrance making, all are designed for exploration of the body, mind and soul.

The House of Aia: Your journey through the different “houses” at Palmaia guide you to your very own House of Aia, or the inner energy that you create or become reawakened to. Inner peace is a true luxury in life and our Aia ignites “the invisible divide between what you believe and what is possible”.

The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear. -Rumi

Who Would I Recommend This Resort For?

During my stay, I met people enjoying their honeymoon, group wellness retreats, girls trip getaways, families and solo travelers. I was here solo and found everyone very welcoming and it was a wonderful opportunity to exhale and embrace mindfulness.
