My Experience Hiking Gros Piton in Saint Lucia

|

Saint Lucia is famous for two stunning landmarks, the volcanic spires known as the Gros and Petit Pitons that soar straight up out of the Caribbean Sea. Their significance and universal value resulted in their inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004. When I first saw a photo of these, they had a mythical quality about them and have always been on my bucket list to see.ย  Then when I learned you could actually hike Gros Piton, I knew I had to experience this.ย  I visited Saint Lucia in April of 2024 and I’m sharing all about my hike below.

Gros Piton and How To Get There

Although you can hike Petit Piton, the Gros Piton Nature Trail is the recommended Piton hike that the majority opt for. Located in the southwestern region of the island near the town of Soufriere, this excursion will be most convenient when staying in this area.  But don’t be deterred if staying up north near Castries as its very doable to experience. I booked a package that included a private driver from my resort in Castries (Sandals La Toc) along with a private guide to hike Gros Piton. In order to hike Gros Piton, you need four main items:

  • Hiking guide to take you up the mountain (they offer both shared and private options).
  • Entrance fee ($50 per person).
  • Water! They require you to carry 2-3 liters per person and you’ll be glad you have it.
  • Determination. This hike is no joke!

My driver picked me up early in the morning from my resort and along the way, we passed through fishing villages and saw banana plantations, coffee farms, and as we got closer, part of the rainforest.ย  During our route, my driver shared so much about Saint Luciaโ€™s history and highlights of the different towns we drove through. We arrived about 90 minutes later at Gros Piton Nature Trail where my guide was waiting.

What to Wear & Pack

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing
  • Backpack
  • Raincoat
  • Band-Aids
  • Sturdy hiking shoes
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Water and sunscreen
  • Snacks
  • Electrolyte packs (I am an LMNT fan).
  • Hiking pole (you can rent one when you check-in at the Interpretative site)
  • Cash (there are local vendors selling ice cream, beverages and sometimes lunch at the end of the hike. Plus, you’ll want to tip your guide).

What To Expect During Your Hike

When we arrived at the trailhead, my guide led me to a small open aired building where I signed a waiver.  There are restrooms available and you can also rent a hiking pole for your climb.  I highly recommend this!  We then began our climb and my guide shared more about the culture of Saint Lucia.  He also explained that the hike would be divided into four main sections and at each one we could rest and hydrate.  At each rest stop, there are benches and your guide will accommodate your pace, so don’t be afraid to communicate how you are feeling. Gros Piton has a 2,620 foot elevation, is approximately two-miles via trail and took us 86 minutes to ascend.

I consider myself to be fairly active and I love a challenge and I will say, this is one of the toughest hikes Iโ€™ve ever experienced.ย  Itโ€™s steep yes, but also requires concentration due to how rocky the trail is, especially when descending.ย  The view from the top was stunning and a great opportunity to take photos and gear up for the hike down. There are railings in the steep sections.ย

When we reached the bottom, there was a small shop selling lunch items, ice-cream and beer and I recommend a scoop each of the mango and coconut ice-cream made locally. Post hike, you will also be close to the rejuvenating sulphur springs and waterfalls, so consider treating yourself and making a stop at these areas. Are you interested in hiking Gros Piton?
