Port Orleans Riverside: Six Reasons Why Southern Charm ‘Disney Style’, Won Us Over!

|

Thinking of heading down to Walt Disney World, but feeling overwhelmed on where to stay?  With over 32 different options, and three different hotel categories (Value, Moderate and Deluxe), it can be hard to narrow things down and find the right place.  But, if you happen to be looking for a resort with a laid-back vibe and lots of ‘active’ things to do, Port Orleans Riverside may be just the place for you.  Port Orleans Riverside is in the moderate category for Disney resorts meaning that it’s a mid-range price so you’ll pay less than the Deluxe resorts, and will find more amenities and added comforts when compared to the value resorts.  Our family of four stayed here and after experiencing value and deluxe resorts alike, I’m sharing six reasons why Port Orleans Riverside is one of my top recommendations to unpack your bags and stay awhile down at Walt Disney World!

1. Southern Charm

Our family is from Montana and being immersed in the Southern hospitality was quite delightful.  The resort is laid out along the Sassagoula River and themed after a port city you’d find in rural Louisiana.  There are two main sections at Port Orleans Riverside; the Alligator Bayou rooms which are reminiscent of ‘woodsy’, bayou-style cottages, and the more manicured Magnolia Bend district which features stately mansions with beautiful lawns and gardens throughout.  From the gorgeous magnolia trees, to the lush tropical plants found in the New Orleans Garden District, nature lovers will enjoy time meandering throughout the grounds.  Do you have a princess lover in your family?  Tiana would be charmed, I’m sure, to have you stay in the Royal Rooms themed after your favorite princesses and feature headboards lit up by fireworks.

2. Ol’ Man Island

Down on the bayou, just over the bridge lies the lushly wooded Ol’ Man Island in the heart of Port Orleans Riverside resort.  Featuring an “old fashioned swimming hole” with a 95-foot waterslide, this pool was the perfect temperature, and like all Disney pools, was very clean and offered different poolside activities from relay races to Disney trivia games.  A kid’s playground is also located here and evening campfires are scheduled, along with s’mores and storytelling.  In full sight of the pool is the quaint and accommodating “Muddy Rivers” pool bar with a menu boasting a wide variety of beverages and snacks.  We found it the perfect place to unwind after a packed day at the theme parks.  Plus, with lifeguards on duty adults can enjoy some conversation while their kids splash in the pool.

3. Surrey Bikes, Horse Drawn Carriages & A River Trail (oh my!)

One of my favorite things to do on vacation is lace up my running shoes and go explore a new area.  At Port Orleans Riverside I enjoyed starting my day with a run or easy going walk on the river trail in the morning.  You can also rent individual bikes or the surrey bikes to take a tour and your kids will get a kick out of notifying others of your arrival by ringing the bell.  Feeling nostalgic for the good ol’ days?  A ride on one of the horse-drawn carriages might be the perfect way to wind down in the evening.

4. Port Orleans French Quarter

Just a short walk or boat ride upriver, and you’ll find yourself at the charming Port Orleans French Quarter resort, a sister resort to Port Orleans Riverside immaculately themed after the historic New Orleans district.  Here you can enjoy the very colorful main pool, Doubloon Lagoon, featuring “Scales”, the sea serpent water slide and the imaginative aquatic play area for younger kids.  Scattered throughout the resort are rooms featuring balconies with wrought-iron railings overlooking cobblestone streets and colorful “jester” figures on the paths.  And of course, a stop at French Quarter would not be complete without stopping by the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory for some Mickey beignets.

5. River Cruise to Disney Springs

The Sassagoula River provides more than just a scenic waterway—it’ll be your favorite mode to venture over to Disney Springs.  Boats run from Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter throughout the day and evening, so make sure you schedule in some shopping time and a reservation at one of the many great eateries found over at Disney Springs.  Plan on about a 20-minute cruise and expect boats to be busy in the evening.

6. Transportation to the Parks

When debating on where to stay, an important consideration is how convenient the bus system is in transporting guests to and from the parks.  Port Orleans Riverside has four internal bus stops, which at first gave us pause thinking there would be delays.  However, after arriving and using the buses, we found the buses to be very reliable and efficient.  Did you know you can now check bus arrival times at the resort from the convenience of your phone on the My Disney Experience app?  Tip:  On the “See Bus Times” tab, make sure you scroll to the bus stop you’ll be using as Port Orleans Riverside has four.

From the gorgeous grounds, convenient location and good ‘ol Southern charm, Port Orleans Riverside has something for kids and adults alike and may be just what you are looking for when thinking of where to stay during your next trip down to Walt Disney World!
