Sailing Through Europe: My AmaWaterways Melodies of the Danube Experience

|

The Melodies of the Danube cruise with AmaWaterways is a beautiful blend of grand European capitals like Budapest and Vienna paired with the charming, storybook villages of Dürnstein and Passau. The itinerary strikes a wonderful balance between immersive city tours, active biking excursions, and local culinary experiences. Plus, the views from the river are also unforgettable. As you glide along the Danube, you’re surrounded by classic European scenery — hilltop castles, church steeples, and peaceful stretches of riverbank where the only sounds are birds singing and the gentle movement of the ship through the water. Throughout the journey, AmaWaterways delivers the rich history and cultural immersion they’re so well known for. River cruising is one of my favorite ways to experience Europe –I also really enjoyed the Colors of Provence and Tulip Time itineraries and compiled a “top ten list” of things to know before you embark on your next river cruise adventure.

I sailed this itinerary in late April 2026 and was lucky to experience near-perfect weather throughout the trip. Our cruise traveled from Budapest to Vilshofen, visiting five different countries along the way. I arrived in Budapest a day early to explore the city before embarkation, and I’ll be more about my recommendations for where to stay and what not to miss soon.

Below, I’m sharing some of my personal favorite moments from the cruise along with a few helpful river cruising tips. Of course, experiences can vary depending on weather, excursion guides, and your own travel style and interests — but hopefully this gives you a helpful glimpse into what makes this itinerary so special.

Budapest

On the first official morning onboard the AmaVerde, I chose the Castle Hill Hike which took us to the Buda side of Budapest so we could experience the stunning Castle Hill District and Fisherman’s Bastion terrace, a scenic UNESCO World Heritage lookout that was built in the late 1800’s in honor of the fisherman who protected the walls in the Middle Ages. We also toured Mathias Church and had some free time to enjoy the views.  Our guide was born and raised in Budapest and was eight years old when communism fell in Budapest.  Along our walk, he shared his perspective and more history of the Buda side. From here, we walked across the bridge to the Pest side where we visited the poignant, Shoes on the Danube Bank Memorial in front of the stunning Parliament building. The “hike” is not challenging, but there are lots of stairs to climb and if you like to be active, I recommend this tour.

After lunch, a Pest City tour was offered and a highlight of this for me was visiting Vajdahunyad Castle, Built in 1896 for the Millennial celebrations, this large complex houses 21 exact replicas of the most magnificent and historic buildings of Hungary. Later that evening, we sailed out of Budapest with spectacular views of the city illuminated after dark. Seeing Budapest from the Danube at night is truly something special — with the Parliament building, bridges, and historic skyline glowing along the riverbanks, don’t miss this when traveling to Budapest.

Bratislava

Waking up in Slovakia, we arrived in the charming capital city, Bratislava — often referred to as the “Beauty on the Danube.” For my excursion, I chose the Bratislava Castle hike, although in hindsight, I wish I would have experienced the “Taste of Bratislava” tour instead. The castle is an easy walk from Old Town, and I likely would have had enough time to visit it afterward on my own. The castle itself offers beautiful panoramic views overlooking the city, but no interior tours were included during our visit. If you enjoy experiencing local cuisine and culture while traveling, I’d recommend choosing the tasting excursion, since both tours still include a walk through Bratislava’s charming Old Town with free time to explore afterward.

I really enjoyed wandering through the Old Town streets, surrounded by beautifully colored buildings, ornate architecture and quirky bronze statues. During my free time, I stumbled upon the most whimsical pastry shop — Konditorei Kormuth. Filled with vintage décor, chandeliers, and elaborate details, it felt like stepping into another era and was the perfect place to slow down with tea and dessert while soaking in the city’s old-world charm.

Vienna

Whenever I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Europe, I’ve always been fascinated with how two worlds exist side by side—all of the mind blowing history (monuments, castles, statues) with normal life happening right around it! Vienna was a perfect example of this and such a beautiful city to explore. I signed up for the morning city bike tour and we stopped at a few memorials to the famous composers of the city (Strauss and Mozart) and wound our way through the Ring Road seeing the Opera House, Parliament, City Hall and the majestic Imperial Palace and Spanish Riding school. I enjoyed the tour (about 10 miles) but if you aren’t used to riding in traffic with frequent stops, I would chose a different bike tour for your cruise.

After lunch, I took the bus offered by AmaWaterways and headed back into town to check out more of the city. I used AmaWaterways new app and map to do a self-guided, audio walking tour of some of the most famous sites.

That evening, I did attend the Vienna evening concert at the House of Strauss.  While I am not a classical music lover, I was inspired by the talented musicians and the music was beautiful. Plus, when in Rome…

Durnstein, Melk Abbey Tour & Grein

Our morning on the river began with gorgeous views of Dürnstein appearing around the bend as we sailed through the Wachau Valley. We only had a short stop here, and all I could think was that I wished we’d had more time. The village was incredibly charming, with its iconic blue abbey tower, cobblestone streets, and colorful buildings. Dürnstein is famous for its apricots and the castle ruins overlooking the village are also historically significant, as Richard the Lionheart was famously imprisoned there for several months beginning in 1192. There is a hiking trail to see the castle with sweeping view of the Danube River valley. In hindsight, I wish I would have chosen the tasting tour which offered more time in Durnstein and I am always up for a great hike.

The second part of our tour found us in Melk to tour the famous Benedictine abbey founded in 1089. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube River, it is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site and during our tour, we walked through the Imperial wing, the famous library, the church and the museum full of beautiful artifacts. Our guide shared interesting stories and perspectives and afterwards we had time to enjoy the beautiful garden grounds. Even though I mentioned wanting more time in Durnstein, this stop was really beautiful. Photos aren’t allowed inside the abbey, the library or the church..

Later that afternoon, we sailed onward to Grein through the scenic Wachau Valley, and it ended up being one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire cruise. Vineyards, villages, castles, and rolling, green hills lined the riverbanks as we relaxed on deck soaking in the scenery. Once in Grein, we toured Greinburg Castle, a castle located right in the center of town, where we learned more about the noble family that has owned the property since the 16th century.

Cesky Krumlov

It was a tough choice between visiting Salzburg — especially after watching The Sound of Music on my flight over — and spending the day in Český Krumlov. After reading reviews from previous cruise guests, I was intriqued by the beauty of Český Krumlov and it gave me the chance to add another country to my list.

Our visit began with a walk up to Český Krumlov Castle, where we were rewarded with sweeping views over the red rooftops and winding streets of the village below. From there, we meandered into town while our guide shared recommendations for how to spend our free time. Guests had the option to tour parts of the castle interior, browse the many small shops and cafés, or enjoy a peaceful walk through the monastery and garden areas nearby. I chose to simply wander the cobblestone streets and take photos and one of the highlights of the afternoon ended up being an incredibly delicious lunch at a tiny pub tucked away on a quiet side street near the river — exactly the kind of unexpected travel moment that ends up becoming one of your favorite memories.

Passau-City of Three Rivers River Inn Bike Tour

The last full day of our cruise found us docking at the wonderful city of Passau, Germany. Passau is best known as the “City of Three Rivers” because the Danube River, Inn, and Ilz Rivers all meet there and we were greeted upon arrival with wonderful views of a hilltop fortress and a glimpse of St Stephen’s Cathedral. I had opted to start my morning in Germany with a bike tour which turned into one of my favorite excursions of the entire cruise.

Our guide met us at the ship and we took a short ride through cobblestone streets of Passau before heading out to a path along the Inn River (its headwaters originate in Switzerland). We pedaled along the Inns River with a dip into a wooded forest on Germany’s side before crossing the river to Austria and riding back to Passau! Along our route, we saw some beautiful castles, historic church steeples, and quaint villages. The ride was about 15 miles with a few short uphill climbs. In talking with AmaWaterways’ wellness host, he mentioned this is one of the more challenging bike rides that is offered. If you are comfortable on a bike and in relatively good shape, you should have no problem completing this adventure.
